Crispy Rotisserie-Style Whole Chicken in the Air Fryer
Crisp-skinned and juicy, this air fryer whole chicken is a fast, reliable weeknight meal. It cooks more quickly than oven roasting and yields a tender, rotisserie-style bird with perfectly crisp skin. Let the air fryer do the work and enjoy a flavorful, family-friendly dinner.
This is one of my favorite methods for cooking a whole chicken. It’s simple, tasty, and reliably loved by everyone at the table.

Use any spice blend you like on the chicken — serve it with a salad and rice or potatoes for a complete meal in minutes.
Whole Chicken Air Fryer
Why use an air fryer instead of the oven? The circulating hot air produces exceptionally crispy skin and retains moisture in the meat, giving a juicier roast than many oven methods. The result often resembles a store-bought rotisserie chicken in flavor and texture.
This recipe is a straightforward way to get a wholesome, delicious dinner on the table without a lot of fuss.

Leftovers are easy to transform. After enjoying the chicken, simmer the carcass with halved onion, carrots, celery, and a bay leaf covered by about 2 inches of cold water. Bring to a boil, then simmer for an hour and strain. Add any meat that fell from the bones back into the broth and chop the cooked vegetables into the pot. Season with salt, pepper, and a splash of vinegar, then simmer egg noodles directly in the broth until tender for a quick chicken noodle soup. Two meals from one bird.
Below are the simple ingredients and minimal equipment you’ll need.
Ingredients
- 3 to 4 pound whole chicken
- Kosher salt
- Black pepper
- Seasoning blend (for example, Montreal chicken seasoning)
- Granulated garlic, garlic powder, or onion powder
- Neutral oil (canola, vegetable, sunflower, or similar)
- Optional: smoked paprika for extra color and flavor
Choose a chicken between 3 and 4 pounds. Larger birds may not fit in many air fryers and won’t cook as reliably.

Montreal Chicken Seasoning works beautifully here, and granulated garlic adds depth. Garlic powder or onion powder can be substituted. Smoked paprika is optional but adds attractive color and a subtle smoky note.
Equipment
- 5.5-quart air fryer or larger capacity
- Paper towels
- Parchment paper
- Instant-read thermometer or meat thermometer
A 5–6 quart basket-style air fryer ensures the chicken fits comfortably. Pat the bird dry inside and out with paper towels — a dry surface helps the oil and spices adhere and produces crispier skin. Parchment paper makes it easier to lift the chicken from the basket and prevents sticking. An instant-read thermometer is essential: check the thickest part of the breast and the thigh. The chicken is done when the breast reaches 165°F and the thigh reaches 175°F. Some prefer the thigh closer to 195°F for more tender, falling-off-the-bone meat.

Patting the chicken dry and coating it with oil before seasoning are key steps for crisp skin. The parchment helps prevent sticking and keeps the skin intact when you remove the bird.
Once cooked, slice and serve with your favorite sides — a simple white bean salad, roasted potatoes, or steamed vegetables all pair well.

Air Fryer Whole Chicken
Combine 1 tablespoon Montreal chicken seasoning, 2 teaspoons kosher salt, 1 teaspoon granulated garlic, and 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika in a small bowl and set aside.
Pat the chicken dry inside and out with paper towels. Place a square of parchment paper in the air fryer basket.
Drizzle 2 tablespoons neutral oil evenly over the breast and back, then rub to coat. Sprinkle the seasoning mixture over the top, bottom, and inside the cavity and rub to distribute evenly.
Place the chicken breast-side down in the air fryer basket. Set the air fryer to 350°F and cook for 30 minutes.
Carefully flip the chicken breast-side up and continue air frying for another 30 minutes, or until the thickest part of the breast reaches 165°F and the thighs reach 175°F. Adjust time as needed based on bird size and your air fryer.
Let the chicken rest for 15 minutes before carving to lock in juices, then serve.
