featured 28516

Pasta bake piled with meatballs, rich sauce, and generous amounts of melted cheese is the perfect dinner tonight. Even better: you don’t need to pre-boil the pasta—everything cooks in the sauce in the oven, so you’ll have a satisfying meal with minimal effort.

Using frozen meatballs and a jarred or homemade tomato sauce makes this Meatball Pasta Bake a quick, hearty option for busy weeknights.

Life often calls for fast, reliable dinners. Between driving my youngest to long rehearsals, homeschooling, trying to connect with my husband, and chasing enough sleep to function, I don’t always have time for complicated cooking. That’s why recipes like this meatball pasta bake are staples in my kitchen.

Homemade doesn’t have to mean fussy or time-consuming. High-quality convenience ingredients—like store-bought frozen meatballs and a good jar of sauce—are an easy way to put a delicious meal on the table without hours of prep.

Combine pasta, sauce, meatballs, ricotta, and plenty of cheese, then bake it all together for a crowd-pleasing casserole that’s both comforting and filling. As mentioned above, the pasta goes straight into the sauce and finishes in the oven—no boiling required.

Easy, filling dinner

When “quick and easy” is a priority, it’s also important that dinner is filling—especially if you have teen boys at the table. This pasta bake delivers both: simple, affordable ingredients combine into a hearty dish that keeps everyone satisfied.

The recipe is versatile and forgiving. It yields a generous portion, so smaller households will likely enjoy leftovers for lunch the next day. Leftovers store well in the baking dish covered with foil, or you can portion them into containers and freeze for later.

One of the best parts about baked pasta dishes is that, aside from the mixing bowl, everything comes together in one pan. That keeps cleanup simple and makes this a practical weeknight meal.

Pasta Bake Recipe Notes

Use any good pasta sauce you like—jarred marinara works excellently, and a sun-dried tomato–based sauce adds a nice depth of flavor with meatballs. Frozen store-bought meatballs are convenient and tasty, and homemade meatballs also work if you prefer to prepare them ahead and freeze extras for quick meals.

This bake is adaptable to many pasta shapes; cavatappi, rotini, ziti, or elbows work well because they hold sauce. You can also vary the cheese: a combination of part-skim ricotta and shredded mozzarella creates a creamy, melty texture.

Pasta Bake

Preheat the oven to 400°F. In a large bowl, whisk together the pasta sauce, water, and ricotta until smooth and uniformly blended. Stir in the uncooked pasta, frozen meatballs, and 1 cup of the shredded mozzarella.

Lightly oil or spray a 9×13-inch baking dish and transfer the mixture into the dish. Cover tightly with foil and place the baking dish on a rimmed baking sheet.

Bake for about 55 minutes, until the pasta is tender and the casserole is bubbly. Remove the foil, sprinkle the remaining cheese over the top, and return to the oven for 5 minutes or until the cheese is fully melted and lightly browned at the edges.

Garnish with torn fresh basil leaves if desired. Serve the pasta bake on its own for a complete meal, or pair it with a simple green salad and some garlic bread if you like.
