How is your New Year going? Did you set any health-related resolutions or make promises to move more? Whether you did or not, most of us agree that staying active is essential to better health. One simple way to improve activity is to make sure you log enough steps each day.
The Evil Genius and I walk a route we know is five miles long every day, but knowing the distance doesn’t tell the whole story — tracking steps and activity patterns completes the picture. Counting each step manually on a five-mile walk would be tedious, so I use a wearable to do it for me.

I use a Fitbit Flex to monitor my movement. Unlike a basic pedometer that only tallies steps, a Fitbit records step count as well as activity intensity, duration, and the times of day you’re active or sedentary. It estimates calories burned and even tracks sleep quality and duration. The device is water-resistant for showering or swimming and offers interchangeable wristbands so it can match any outfit. It syncs with your computer or smartphone so your stats are always accessible, letting you monitor progress over time. The accompanying app also offers calorie tracking if you’re working toward weight goals. For me, it’s been an excellent overall fitness tool.
Have you ever wondered how many steps you take each day? I was surprised by how few steps I logged when I first started wearing a Fitbit — and that realization pushed me to move more.
The Giveaway
To celebrate the new year and the end of January, a group of my favorite bloggers and I are giving away a two-pack of Fitbits: one for him and one for her. You could keep both, give one to a friend or family member, or split them between two people who could use a fitness boost. The prize includes two Fitbit trackers plus extra wristbands so you can swap styles to match your wardrobe.
