Here’s the deal: I’m turning 40 this week, and I’m celebrating out loud. Every day I get to be alive feels like proof that I’m doing something right, so I’m owning it. To mark the occasion I’m sharing some favorite foods and hosting some fabulous giveaways. After kicking things off with fried pies yesterday, today’s feature is another beloved treat: a Peppermint Patty Milkshake. It’s rich, minty, and chocolate-forward—made with York Peppermint Patties, chocolate ice cream, chocolate syrup, and just a splash of milk to keep everything blendable. It’s finished with a generous cloud of whipped cream, extra chocolate syrup, and a frozen peppermint patty perched on the rim. And yes—there’s also a giveaway. Read on.

I have a long history with York Peppermint Patties. Back in the day I’d funnel my lunch money into candy and Hot Fries—usually a full-sized peppermint patty with fries on Mondays and Wednesdays, Reese’s on Tuesdays, KitKat on Fridays. Sorry, Mom and Dad. Those were the priorities.
What I love most is the contrast: cool, bright peppermint filling wrapped in bittersweet dark chocolate. Finding them frozen only amplified that love. A bag of frozen patties is essential on a humid summer day. So it was only natural to try them in a milkshake.
On a particularly hot afternoon last week I restocked my peppermint patties and discovered I’d squeezed the last of my chocolate ice cream into the freezer. Short on freezer space, I blended that nearly empty half-gallon with a couple of patties that had softened on the ride home, added a splash of milk, a tablespoon of chocolate syrup, and hit the blender. The result was a dense, silky, ultra-chocolatey milkshake with a fresh peppermint hit. I crowned it with a ridiculous amount of whipped cream, another drizzle of chocolate syrup, and a peppermint patty pressed to the side of the glass. I shared a sip with the boys—then retreated to finish it myself.

You only get one 40th birthday month, right? RIGHT?
Cook’s Notes
- The darker the chocolate ice cream you use, the closer the shake will taste to the peppermint patty itself. Dark chocolate ice cream works best; if you can’t find it, use regular chocolate and add a teaspoon of unsweetened cocoa powder.
- You might see tiny flecks of peppermint filling in the shake even after blending. I find those little flecks pleasantly refreshing rather than a flaw.
