Berry Kombucha Margarita Recipe — Refreshing Probiotic Cocktail
I am thrilled to be partnering with Princess Cruises on these 4th of July–ready Berry Kombucha Margaritas. All opinions, photos, and the recipe are my own.
Tart, sweet, and very refreshing, berry kombucha replaces most of the lime juice in this modern twist on a classic Margarita. With or without a salted rim, these Berry Kombucha Margaritas are perfect for hot summer days.

I’m unabashedly addicted to kombucha. At first I resisted the hype, assuming it was another fleeting health-food trend. But once I tried it, I was hooked. I drink kombucha almost every day—store-bought or homemade—whatever it takes to keep a steady supply on hand.
It took me a while to think of adding kombucha to cocktails. A trial with Tito’s vodka and kombucha a few months ago instantly convinced me to expand my kombucha cocktail repertoire.
On a rainy day in Cozumel during a Western Caribbean cruise with Princess Cruises, I stopped into Pancho’s Backyard and was served a magnificently large classic margarita while waiting for fish tacos. Two things became clear:
- I needed to make larger margaritas at home.
- The sweet-tart margarita flavor reminded me of lemonade-style kombucha.
Back home I started experimenting. While lemonade kombucha works well, I fell in love with the Berry Kombucha Margarita version. They’re now on regular rotation at my house. I may not be on a cruise every day, but these cocktails are a lovely way to channel that sunny, coastal feeling in Western New York.
If you enjoy cocktails, try other favorites from my collection, such as a Pimm’s Cup boozy popsicle, Boozy Strawberry Basil Lemonade, Lady Greyhound cocktails, Bourbon Apple Cider, Watermelon Margaritas, a Skinny White Russian, or a mixed berry and basil sangria.
Berry Kombucha Margaritas
Some kombucha brands work better than others in cocktails; a good rule of thumb is that if you like drinking the kombucha on its own, it will likely mix well. For these Berry Kombucha Margaritas I recommend a berry-forward kombucha—Synergy’s Gingerberry or Raspberry Lemonade styles are delicious choices.
Fresh or frozen mixed berries both work well. Frozen berries help keep the drink chilled longer. Salt on the rim is optional: it adds a savory contrast and moves the cocktail closer to a traditional margarita profile, but you can skip it if you prefer a cleaner, sweeter drink.

Ingredients
- ice
- 1/2 lime cut into 4 wedges
- 6 ounces tequila preferably reposado
- 1 ounce Cointreau or Triple Sec
- 1/2 cup mixed berries fresh or frozen
- 16 ounces berry kombucha chilled
optional: kosher salt
Instructions
-
If you want a salted rim, pour kosher salt on a plate, moisten the rim of two tall glasses with a lime wedge, and press the rims into the salt. Fill both glasses with ice. If you skip the salt, squeeze one lime wedge into each glass.
Add tequila and Cointreau or Triple Sec to a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake until the outside of the shaker is chilled. Strain into the prepared, ice-filled glasses. Top each glass with berry kombucha, garnish with an extra lime wedge, and serve immediately.
