featured 23667

I developed this Golden Honey Milk recipe in partnership with Horizon Organic. I enjoy cooking with their wholesome products and feel good serving them to my active kids. My children adore this soothing, gently sweet drink — a blend of warming spices that helps everyone relax at the end of the day.

My kids sometimes have trouble settling down at bedtime—their minds keep spinning. If you face the same “whirling dervish” problem, try this simple comfort ritual inspired by Hayao Miyazaki’s film Ponyo, where a parent makes hot milk with honey and cinnamon. I merged that cozy idea with the Ayurvedic golden milk tradition to create a warm, lightly sweetened drink flavored with cinnamon, turmeric, ginger, and a touch of black pepper. It’s comforting, calming, and easy to make.

Cook’s Notes

  • Black pepper: Turmeric contains beneficial compounds that are more readily absorbed when combined with black pepper and gentle heat. In this recipe, black pepper provides a background warmth that enhances the cinnamon, ginger, and turmeric without overpowering them.
  • Make a batch of the spice mix: The recipe calls for more spice mix than needed for a single cup, but storing it makes future preparations fast and convenient. It’s nice to have a jar on the shelf for evenings when you want a quick, nourishing drink.
  • Milk choice: For extra nutrition, use whole milk with added DHA Omega-3 if you prefer; that can be a nice bedtime boost.
  • Honey: Choose a mild-flavored honey you enjoy. I prefer raw honey for its flavor and keep it out of the heat—stir it in after removing the milk from the stove to preserve its qualities.
