I’m excited to partner with Sabra for this delicious Hummus After School Snack Board. All opinions, photos, and recipes are my own.
Can we be honest for a minute? I was an excellent student who earned great grades with minimal effort. The real motivation, though, was the snacks. My mom was the undisputed Queen of After School Snacks—her spreads were legendary, and my friends always wanted to come over to eat.
We didn’t have much—my parents were in full-time ministry—so her secret was simple: variety.
She would gather odds and ends from the fridge and pantry and arrange them artfully on a cookie sheet or cutting board. With a flourish she’d present the board and declare the after school snack ready. Mom was one of the original snack-board creators.
Her boards always included a few tasty carbs like crackers or bread, a calcium-rich cheese, crunchy raw vegetables and pickles, something spreadable such as cream cheese or mustard, and whatever little extras filled gaps or looked fun. We couldn’t wait to dig in.

As a kid it was simply fun and tasty. As an adult I appreciate the thoughtful strategy: she stretched the grocery budget while keeping us happy and encouraging us to eat a reasonably nutritious snack.
Now that I’m gradually more like my mom every day, I celebrate her approach. And in her honor, I created this Hummus After School Snack Board in partnership with Sabra. My kids love it too—this board is the ultimate after-school treat.
Cook’s Notes for Hummus After School Snack Board
- Sabra offers hummus flavors to suit every palate; we love Supremely Spicy, Roasted Garlic, and Roasted Red Pepper. You can also embellish Classic Hummus—drizzle with garlic-infused extra virgin olive oil and sprinkle a pinch of za’atar for extra flair.
- My go-to formula is the 3–2–1 Rule: 3 vegetables, 2 carbs or breads, 1 hummus. Keep those basics on hand and add whatever tasty bits you find in the fridge to fill the board.
- This board scales down nicely for a packed lunch: portion hummus into a small container and include smaller amounts following the 3–2–1 Rule.

Tasty things to include with your Hummus After School Snack Board
Complement the board with favorite drinks and bites from what you have on hand. Ideas that pair well include chilled ginger switchel, pumpkin-spiced chai, homemade larabars, savory cured pork, or crunchy flavored crackers. Fresh baked items such as jalapeño cheddar bread, soft pretzels, garlic knots, or sesame braided semolina bread are all excellent options. Use whatever you enjoy and that fits your pantry.
