Strawberry Wineade: Refreshing Sparkling Strawberry Wine Cocktail

Please excuse the confession up front: if you are a serious wine purist, you might want to look away. This one’s not about tasting notes or terroir. It’s about pure, refreshing summer fun—wine mixed with strawberry lemonade and served in a jar.

It’s been a whirlwind few weeks here: kids heading off to camp, preparations for my brother’s wedding, getting the house ready for guests, and then some travel that was equal parts work and great company.

Last weekend I had the joy of visiting my friend and food blogger Ree Drummond, known to many as The Pioneer Woman. For over a year Ree and I had been planning a hands-on weekend of cheesemaking, bread baking, and canning. I couldn’t wait to teach some of my favorite techniques and to share good food with good people. Ree surprised me by inviting a group of women and fellow food bloggers I’d come to know online. We laughed, drank wine, made cheese and bread, ate steaks and barbecue chicken, jarred preserves, and had an unforgettable time.

I was thrilled to spend time with Bridget, Robyn, Wendy, Sandy, Amy, and Georgia—each one as warm and lovely in person as they are on their blogs. The weekend was full of cooking, conversation, and a whole lot of camaraderie.

A few nights before I left for Oklahoma, I mixed strawberry lemonade for the kids. In a moment of late-night multitasking I poured lemonade into a jar I’d been sipping white wine from earlier. It was an accident that turned into something unexpected: the lemonade and the chilled semi-dry white wine combined to make an incredibly refreshing drink. I had another jar—yes, still a jar—and decided, briefly, to keep the recipe my little guilty pleasure secret.

Then at Ree’s I was handed a glass of white wine mixed with French tangerine soda. It was delicious, and that gave me the courage to confess my strawberry-lemonade-and-wine experiment. The response was delight rather than derision, and I realized this mix is worth sharing. So here it is: Strawberry Wineade—simple, pretty, and perfect for hot days.

A super-refreshing drink born from a happy accident in hot weather: fresh strawberry lemonade joined with chilled semi-dry white wine over ice. Nothing fancy, just vivid pink color and instant relief from the heat.

Ingredients

To Make the Strawberry Lemonade

  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 1 quart cold water
  • 1 cup frozen hulled, unsweetened strawberries

To Make the Strawberry Wineade

  • 1/2 cup strawberry lemonade
  • 1/2 cup chilled semi-dry white wine

Instructions

  • Make a simple syrup by gently heating 1 cup sugar and 1 cup water, stirring until the sugar dissolves. Pour the syrup into a blender, add the lemon juice, the quart of cold water, and the frozen strawberries. Blend on high until smooth. Transfer to a pitcher or jar with a tight lid and chill until ready to use.

To Make a Strawberry Wineade:

  • Fill a pint jar or glass with ice. Pour 1/2 cup chilled semi-dry white wine over the ice, then add 1/2 cup strawberry lemonade. Stir gently with a straw or chopstick.
  • Sit back, relax, and enjoy.
