Bacon. Horseradish. Mustard.
Does that combination make your mouth water? Each of those flavors is excellent on its own, but together they create something irresistible. I can’t take credit for the idea — it came from my fifteen-year-old son.
I’m proud of him.
I was working on a Bacon Horseradish Potato Salad when he suggested, “Why not Bacon Horseradish Mustard?” I asked what he’d put it on and he answered, “A spoon.”
Again — proud.
I try to test recipe ideas my kids suggest. It’s a great way to include them in the kitchen and give them ownership over what they eat, which often helps reduce picky eating. Sometimes the ideas flop and we laugh about it; other times they turn into genuinely brilliant recipes. Teenagers aren’t exactly kids, but I’ll still call him mine.
(He’s still my baby.)
So what makes this condiment so good? It’s simple: three quality ingredients that complement one another — spicy brown mustard, prepared horseradish, and crispy bacon. Because there are only three main components, choose each one with care so the final result really sings.
Bacon Horseradish Mustard Notes:
- Pick a mustard that tastes good on its own — spicy brown mustard works best. Avoid brands with artificial colorings; mustard is naturally yellow.
- Use thick-sliced, hickory-smoked bacon for bold flavor. Gentle applewood smoke can be overwhelmed by the horseradish and mustard.
- Choose prepared horseradish with real heat. This condiment needs horseradish that packs a punch to stand up to the bacon and mustard.
- Try not to eat it straight from the spoon. Once the bacon is crisp and mixed in, it’s tempting, but this is incredible on sausages, hot dogs, hamburgers, sandwiches, or even soft pretzels.
When you have a jar of this bright, spicy, bacon-studded mustard in the fridge, the serving options are endless: slather it on grilled sausages, hot dogs, or burgers; spread it on a thick roast turkey sandwich; stack it into a BLT for extra oomph; or dip soft pretzels into it — my kids adored that. It’s a small amount of work for a big flavor payoff.
How would you serve this condiment worthy of acclaim?
