Dulce de Leche Caramel Chai Latte Recipe

I could hardly wait to share this, but I held off because I know many of you plan every detail of your Thanksgiving menu weeks in advance. Still, if you’ve already mapped out the feast and the minute-by-minute cooking schedule, you might appreciate a calm, cozy Dulce de Leche Chai Latte to sip between tasks. And if you don’t plan Thanksgiving in Excel—no judgment—let’s at least agree on the Dulce de Leche Chai Latte.

Chai is wonderful on its own, and you can choose from many delightful blends. I like a robust chai that holds up well when mixed with caramel or other flavors—pumpkin spice or eggnog, for example—but use whichever chai you prefer.

Cook’s Notes

  • Brew a strong cup of chai. Since you’ll be diluting it with hot, frothy milk, the tea should be bold enough to shine through.
  • Start with 2 tablespoons of dulce de leche and add more only after you’ve mixed in the milk and tasted. Two tablespoons is plenty for many palates, but adjust to your sweet preference.
  • You can froth your milk or simply heat it. Froth gives the latte a festive lift, but warmed milk is perfectly satisfying.
  • Top with whipped cream for an extra treat. Store-bought aerosol cream works fine, or make your own whipped cream from fresh cream for a cleaner flavor and the option to infuse it with vanilla, bourbon, or other extracts.

Instructions

  • Add 2 tablespoons of dulce de leche and a chai tea bag to a large mug. Pour about 4 ounces of boiling water over the tea bag and the dulce de leche. (If you’re using green or white chai, use water slightly below boiling.)
  • If you have a milk frother, froth the milk until it roughly doubles in volume. Otherwise, heat the milk in a microwave-safe container or a saucepan until steamy.
  • Pour the hot milk into the brewed tea. Leave the tea bag in for a stronger brew or remove it based on your preference. Serve as is or add a generous dollop of whipped cream. Warm an additional teaspoon or two of dulce de leche and drizzle it over the top.
