Discover South Walton, Florida: Beaches, Dining & Activities

Visit South Walton I’ve been fortunate lately to pack a bag and fly solo more than once. I spent a weekend in North Carolina with friends, enjoyed three days in Manhattan, and attended BlogHer Food 2014 in Miami. After a long, cold winter and an unexpectedly chilly spring in Western New York, I was eager for sun, sand, great food, and a touch of glamour. I was thrilled to be invited to the South Walton Culinary Showcase on May 16 at the Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM).

View of the bay in Miami at South Walton Party The view from PAMM was breathtaking. About fifty of us enjoyed award-winning dishes during an interactive chef showcase featuring Chef Michael Guerra of The Pearl and Chef Kevin Korman of Caliza Restaurant. We also watched Justin Gaffrey, the 2005 South Walton Artist of the Year, create a new collaborative piece live during the event.

Gaffrey even invited attendees to contribute to the artwork. My painting skills are best described as “enthusiastic stick figure,” but I happily tried my hand with a trowel. He remained gracious and calm, so I didn’t feel like I ruined anything. His work was stunning, capturing the bright white sugar sand of South Walton with impressive texture and color.

We were served a refreshing local signature cocktail called “The 850.” It tasted so good I immediately checked my phone to see where it could be ordered near me. It appears the best place to enjoy the authentic version is in South Walton, which only made me more determined to plan a trip. Each guest received a custom tablet holder designed to look like a cutting board—a charming, personalized touch that felt both thoughtful and very South Walton.

The food was the star of the night. South Walton’s culinary scene is growing rapidly, boasting a high concentration of award-winning restaurants, abundant fresh Gulf seafood, and an extended growing season for local fruits and vegetables. That combination made for a memorable, food-lover’s evening filled with creative flavors and beautifully presented dishes.

Visit South Walton I also visited the Perfect Escape Booth to experience the look and feel of South Walton’s sugar-white coastline. I admit I briefly considered whether I could fit that booth into my suitcase—note to self: buy a bigger bag. The booth offered a vivid preview of the beaches and atmosphere I’ll be sharing with my family when we visit this summer.

Visit South Walton This trip felt like a reconnaissance mission. South Walton has sixteen distinct beaches, each with its own character, and I scouted a few to determine which would suit my family best—whether we’re seeking calm relaxation, family-friendly amenities, or more active beach fun. With sugar-white sand and a welcoming atmosphere, I expect my family will want to return regularly.

South Walton offers a variety of experiences to suit different preferences: sporty and active beaches for outdoor enthusiasts, upscale areas with boutique dining and shopping, relaxed stretches of sand for quiet getaways, family-friendly spots with convenient facilities, and pet-friendly options so furry companions can join the fun.

If you’re considering a visit, think about what you want from your beach day—adventure, relaxation, luxury, or family time—and choose a beach that matches that mood. South Walton’s combination of natural beauty, outstanding cuisine, and thoughtful hospitality makes it a destination that appeals to many types of travelers.
