Crispy Fried Mozzarella Sticks with Marinara Dipping Sauce

Yesterday I shared a giveaway and a long recipe that intimidated some readers with its many ingredients. Today I’m offering a much simpler option: a four-ingredient fried mozzarella stick recipe that’s quick, satisfying, and totally indulgent. It’s fried. It’s cheese. What’s not to love?

I’ve long been a fan of deep-fried treats. Over the years I’ve made homemade tortilla chips, sesame wonton crisps, sriracha crab rangoons, beignets, and empanadas. Fried mozzarella sticks are one of those nostalgic comfort foods for me. When my family moved from Michigan to New York during high school, I felt awkward and out of place. One small-town-to-small-town move made me feel suddenly urban — at least compared to the hundred-people town I’d left. There was a local spot near my dad’s camp that did miniature golf, char-grilled burgers, ice cream, and an array of deep-fried delights I hadn’t seen before: fried mushrooms, cauliflower, and, most memorably, mozzarella sticks. Those crunchy, gooey, stringy, salty sticks quickly became my favorite treat.

As an adult I tried making mozzarella sticks at home many times. Traditional methods can be fussy: freeze the cheese, dredge, dip, roll, freeze again, then fry. When you want them fast, that long process isn’t ideal. Then I spotted a simple idea on Pinterest adapted from Taste of Home: wrap mozzarella sticks in egg roll wrappers and fry them. Could it really be that easy? I had to try.

Using store-bought egg roll wrappers, individually wrapped mozzarella sticks, a neutral frying oil, a sprinkle of Italian seasoning, and warm pizza sauce for dipping, I timed the process. In about twenty-five minutes I made two dozen fried mozzarella sticks and tidied up the kitchen — leaving only the cooling oil untouched. The results were impressive: a crisp, golden exterior that crackled when bitten and a hot, stretchy cheese center. The light seasoning adds a familiar Italian note, and the warm pizza sauce makes each bite feel like a mini pizzeria indulgence.

And honestly, part of the joy is doing it without worrying about manners or cheese on your chin. Eat them proudly.

Fried Mozzarella Sticks

Crunchy egg-roll wrappers replace traditional breading, creating a crisp shell around hot, stretchy mozzarella. Serve with warm pizza sauce for dipping. Gently adapted from Taste of Home.

Ingredients

  • 12–24 individual mozzarella sticks
  • 12–24 egg roll wrappers often found in the freezer or produce section
  • Italian seasoning, to taste
  • canola, vegetable, or peanut oil for frying
  • pizza sauce for dipping (optional)

Instructions

  • Pour about 1/2 inch of oil into a tall-sided skillet and heat to 375°F (190°C) over medium–medium-high heat.
  • While the oil heats, place a mozzarella stick near the bottom corner of an egg roll wrapper and sprinkle lightly with Italian seasoning.
  • Fold the bottom corner over the cheese and roll the stick up about halfway.
  • Fold the wrapper sides in toward the center, moisten the remaining corner with a fingertip dipped in water, then finish rolling to seal tightly.
  • Fry the wrapped sticks in batches, taking care not to crowd the pan, for 30–60 seconds per side until deep golden brown. If wrappers begin to leak cheese, remove them immediately.
  • Transfer the fried sticks to a paper towel–lined plate with tongs or a strainer. Let rest at least two minutes before serving so the cheese sets slightly.
  • Serve warm with pizza sauce for dipping, if desired.
