As a child I always looked forward to that special moment in late fall—usually just before Thanksgiving—when my mom decided the season had arrived to make chex-style snack mix. Making large family-size batches became one of my responsibilities, and I took it seriously. Back then I avoided the shredded wheat because it didn’t make that satisfying crunch for me and seemed to soak up butter and seasoning. Over time my taste changed completely: shredded whole wheat became the highlight of the bowl, ranking above pretzels and Rice Chex.

Now I’ve adopted my mom’s tradition of waiting until Thanksgiving is near to make the holiday-style snack, which somehow makes it feel more special. But that doesn’t stop me from craving a crunchy, savory snack at other times of the year. Recently I found an extra box of bite-sized shredded wheat while cleaning the pantry and decided it was time to transform it into something irresistible. It’s not technically Chex mix if you don’t use Chex, but I used the same method—tossing cereal in a garlicky butter mixture, toasting it low and slow, and finishing with a generous sprinkle of cheddar cheese powder—to create a buttery, garlicky, crunchy cheddar snack that disappeared quickly at our house. My kids declared it the best after-school snack ever.
I used my tried-and-true garlic butter blend—melted butter swirled with Worcestershire, celery salt, garlic and onion powders, and a pinch of cayenne—tossed with the shredded whole wheat cereal and baked at a low temperature until perfectly crisp. While still hot I added a good dusting of white cheddar powder for that popcorn-like cheesy finish. The result is a snack with bright cheddar flavor, savory depth from the Worcestershire, and a satisfying crunch.
These Whole Wheat Cheddar Garlic Snacks are a great everyday treat and will bridge the gap until chex mix season once again arrives. If you want other snack ideas, try hummus boards or za’atar tortilla strips for salads and snacking—simple ways to keep snack time interesting without a lot of fuss.
Whole Wheat Cheddar Garlic Snacks
- Don’t use frosted mini-wheats for this recipe—they’ll become a sticky mess and won’t produce the crunchy savory texture you want.
- This recipe uses a fair amount of butter because shredded wheat soaks it up. Use enough to coat the cereal evenly so the seasoning adheres and the pieces crisp in the oven.
- My favorite white cheddar powder is made by Hoosier Hill Farms and is ideal for a bright, dye-free finish. It works beautifully on popcorn, crackers, and other savory snacks.

Ingredients
- 1 box bite-sized shredded whole wheat cereal about 16.4 ounces
- 2 sticks butter
- 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon celery salt or seasoned salt
- 1 teaspoon granulated garlic or garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon granulated onion or onion powder
- 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon ground cayenne pepper
- 1/3 cup cheddar cheese powder
Instructions
-
Preheat the oven to 275°F (135°C).
-
Place the bite-sized shredded wheat in a large mixing bowl. Melt the butter in a small saucepan or in the microwave, then whisk in the Worcestershire sauce, celery salt, granulated garlic, granulated onion, and cayenne pepper. Drizzle the seasoned butter over the cereal and toss gently to coat.
-
Spread the coated cereal in a single layer on a half-sheet pan and bake for about 1 hour, stirring every 15 minutes, until pieces are golden and crunchy. While still hot, toss the cereal with the cheddar cheese powder so it adheres evenly.
-
Serve warm or let cool to room temperature before storing in an airtight container. For best flavor and texture eat within a week; re-crisp in a 275°F oven if pieces begin to soften.
