Silky Orange Mousse Recipe with Zesty Citrus Cream

This post is sponsored by the Florida Department of Citrus.

I’m a devoted fan of creamy desserts — custards, puddings, ice creams, mousses — and when the Florida Department of Citrus asked me to create recipes featuring 100% Florida Orange Juice, I jumped at the chance. My family already loves Florida OJ, so I wanted to highlight its natural sweetness in a simple, cool dessert. Inspired by the classic creamsicle, I developed a light and airy Creamy Orange Mousse that blends bright orange flavor with vanilla-scented whipped cream.

This mousse is one of the easiest and most crowd-pleasing desserts I’ve made. With just heavy cream and Florida orange juice as the main ingredients, it’s naturally refreshing and perfectly suited to warm days or casual gatherings. The texture is fluffy and cold, with a subtle vanilla aroma. It’s simple enough that the kids can help make it, which is always a bonus in our busy household.

Part of what makes this recipe so convenient is that the ingredients are pantry and fridge staples. I usually keep a pint or two of heavy cream on hand, and our refrigerator rarely lacks 100% Florida Orange Juice. We reach for Florida OJ as a quick, nutritious drink full of folate, vitamin C, and potassium, with no added sugar. It’s our family’s go-to for rehydration after activities like dance class, hiking, disc golf, and biking. The natural potassium is helpful for muscle recovery after workouts, too. With all of that, it’s easy to see why I was excited to collaborate with the Florida Department of Citrus.

Cook’s Notes

  • We use unflavoured gelatin in this recipe. Measure carefully and sprinkle the gelatin over the orange juice rather than stirring it in. Let it sit for a few minutes to “bloom” (hydrate) before heating — this improves its gelling power.
  • After the gelatin blooms, heat it briefly until liquefied but do not boil. Stir it smooth before adding to the whipped cream mixture.
  • Whip the cream with the confectioner’s sugar to firm peaks—when the whisk lifts, the peak should hold its shape but not be overwhipped, or you’ll end up with sweet butter.
  • Fold the melted gelatin, remaining orange juice, vanilla, and orange zest into the whipped cream until evenly combined. Chill until set, then serve in individual dishes or a pan to cut into squares.

Creamy Orange Mousse

Rebecca Lindamood

Fluffy, dreamy, vanilla-scented Creamy Orange Mousse is as easy as whipping cream and stirring in a few ingredients. Simple enough for every day, impressive enough for entertaining.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/4 cups Florida Orange Juice divided
  • 1 tablespoon unflavoured gelatin
  • 1 1/2 cups heavy whipping cream
  • 6 tablespoons confectioner’s sugar
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • zest of one orange
  • orange slices for garnish

Instructions

  • Measure 1/4 cup of the Florida Orange Juice into a microwave-safe bowl or measuring cup. Sprinkle the gelatin over the juice and set aside for 10 minutes to bloom.
  • In a stand mixer fitted with a whisk or using an electric mixer, beat the heavy cream and confectioner’s sugar until firm peaks form. In a separate bowl, whisk together the remaining orange juice, vanilla extract, and orange zest.
  • Microwave the bloomed gelatin for about 30 seconds, or until fully liquefied. Do not boil. Stir the gelatin smooth, then pour it into the whipped cream along with the remaining orange juice mixture. Whisk gently until evenly combined.
  • Spoon into individual serving dishes or a square pan. Cover and refrigerate until firm, about 3 hours. Garnish each serving with an orange slice before serving.
