Raise your hand if you think pizza is the perfect food.
I have mine raised. Pizza is one of those universally loved dishes—when it’s done right. Too many people have written off pizza because they’ve encountered gummy crust, processed cheese, badly chosen toppings, or bland sauce. The truth is a great pizza starts with simple, solid foundations: good dough, thoughtful toppings, and a flavorful sauce.
This slow-cooker pizza sauce is a versatile base that works for almost any pizza (except white pizzas, which use a different approach). You can vary crusts—whole wheat, semolina, cornmeal, rye—and toppings—pepperoni, sausage, vegetables, bacon, pineapple—and still rely on a robust homemade sauce to pull everything together.
Using a slow-cooker gives this sauce its depth. A low, gentle simmer brings out complex tomato flavor and melds garlic, herbs, olive oil, and cheese into a thick, brick-red sauce that’s perfect for spreading on pizza. It also makes a large batch you can freeze for later: ideal for last-minute pizza nights, dipping breadsticks, or spooning over pasta.
This recipe yields about six cups of sauce—enough for four to five large pizzas. It’s easy to scale up if you want to freeze individual portions for future use. Pair these portions with premade dough or pre-baked shells in your freezer for quick, satisfying pizzas whenever cravings strike.

Ingredients
- 2 cans (12 ounces each) tomato paste
- 2 cans (8 ounces each) tomato sauce
- 1/2 cup (or more) water
- 1–4 cloves garlic, minced (to taste)
- 2 tablespoons dried oregano
- 1 tablespoon dried basil
- 1–4 tablespoons dried parsley flakes (to taste)
- 3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
- 1 anchovy fillet
- 1–2 tablespoons raw or granulated sugar (adjust to taste)
- 3–4 tablespoons freshly grated Parmesan (or Romano/Asiago blend)
- Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
Instructions
- Whisk the tomato paste, tomato sauce, water, garlic, oregano, basil, parsley, olive oil, anchovy fillet, and 1 tablespoon sugar in the slow-cooker until smooth.
- Cover and set the slow-cooker to LOW. Simmer for about four hours, stirring every 30 minutes to prevent scorching, until the sauce is a thick, brick-red color. Add water by the tablespoon if it becomes too thick while cooking.
- Stir in the grated cheese and taste the sauce.
- Adjust seasoning and sugar if needed.
- Cool completely, portion into single-use containers, and freeze until ready to make pizza.
