A pizza sub, also called a pizza sandwich, is a toasted, tender sub roll filled with garlicky Italian sausage crumbles, generous melted mozzarella, and pepperoni with crispy edges. This straightforward recipe is easy to scale to feed any number of hungry people.

Pizza Sandwich
There’s no such thing as too many pizza variations, and pizza subs are one of the best: everything you love about pizza, served in sandwich form. A lightly oiled and seasoned sub roll gets toasted until just golden, then layered with cheese, sausage mixed with sauce, and pepperoni. Return the assembled sandwiches to the oven until the cheese is melted and bubbling and the edges are toasty.
Serve with extra pizza sauce for dipping if you like. The recipe keeps things simple and delicious—no need to complicate it.

Pizza Sub
You can customize these subs with your favorite pizza toppings: onions, bell peppers, olives, mushrooms, Canadian bacon, or even pineapple. If you add vegetables, sauté them first until crisp-tender—these sandwiches only return to the oven for about 5–8 minutes, which is enough to warm them but not to cook raw vegetables thoroughly.
Assembling is quick: the rolls toast briefly to develop a little structure, then you layer cheese, the sausage-sauce mixture, and more cheese before finishing in the oven. The result is hot, cheesy, and satisfying.

Equipment
-
1 half sheet pan
-
parchment paper
-
measuring spoons and cups
-
silicone scraper or spoon
Ingredients
- 1 sub roll
- 1 teaspoon olive oil
- ½ teaspoon Italian seasoning blend or more to taste
- 1/2 cup Italian sausage crumbles
- ¼ cup pizza sauce plus extra for dipping
- 4 slices mozzarella cheese or about 1 cup loosely packed shredded mozzarella
- 6 slices pepperoni
- 1 thinly sliced green onion
Instructions
-
Preheat the oven to 450°F (232°C). Line a half sheet pan with parchment paper.
-
Open the sub roll and drizzle the cut surfaces with olive oil. Sprinkle with ½ teaspoon Italian seasoning. Place the roll on the prepared pan and toast in the oven for about 5 minutes, watching so it only develops a light golden tint.
-
While the roll toasts, combine the cooked Italian sausage crumbles with the pizza sauce and set aside.
-
Remove the pan from the oven and place two slices of mozzarella on the toasted roll to cover the surface. Spoon the sausage-and-sauce mixture over the cheese, then add the remaining two slices of mozzarella on top.
-
Return the pan to the oven and bake until the cheese is melted and bubbly to your liking. Remove from the oven, sprinkle sliced green onions over the top, and serve immediately with extra sauce for dipping or drizzling.
