Peanut Butter Chocolate Magic Shell: Quick Dessert Topping Recipe

We’re a household that’s particular about peanut butter. For years I grabbed whatever jar was on sale, assuming peanut butter was simply peanuts, oil, and salt. When I finally read labels, I was surprised to see long lists of additives. We switched to natural peanut butter, though we missed the convenience of no-stir, easily spreadable varieties. Recently Peter Pan released a no-stir option called Simply Ground, and I put it to the test by using it in my usual magic shell recipe with coconut oil to make a Peanut Butter Chocolate Magic Shell.

The result was fantastic. Peter Pan Simply Ground Peanut Butter is smooth with a hint of crunch, and it blended easily into the chocolate and coconut oil. The tiny nut pieces add just enough texture to make the magic shell more interesting without making it gritty.

This peanut butter solved a family dilemma: everyone prefers the flavor and texture of crunchy peanut butter, but traditional crunchy varieties tend to tear sandwich bread. My middle child—our resident peanut butter critic—called it “Perfect! It’s just crunchy enough and it spreads on bread without ripping it up.” I didn’t get much of a chance to verify his verdict: the jar became an irresistible snack, with the guys sneaking spoonfuls until it was scraped clean. The wide-mouthed jar made it easy to reach the last bits, which I appreciated since Simply Ground has a short, recognizable ingredient list without artificial flavors, colors, or preservatives. It also has zero trans fat per serving, is gluten free, cholesterol free, and kosher certified. With about 7 grams of protein per serving, it’s a dependable snack for active kids and adults alike.

Cook’s Notes

  • Keep it simple: melt the ingredients together in the microwave or gently on the stovetop.
  • Don’t overheat. After the first minute in the microwave, use short 30-second bursts and stir well between each to avoid scorching.
  • Store the magic shell in a sealed jar at room temperature.
  • To reheat in a microwave, remove the lid, cover the jar loosely with a paper towel, and microwave in 30-second bursts, stirring after each, until the mixture is pourable. If you don’t have a microwave, place the closed jar in a saucepan of gently simmering water until the contents loosen.
