Crispy Baked Honey Garlic Chicken with Sticky Glaze

Irresistibly sticky and a deep mahogany brown, this baked honey garlic chicken is meltingly tender and surprisingly easy to make. The aroma while it bakes is irresistible — your kitchen will smell like comfort food in the best way.

Baked Honey Garlic Chicken

When chicken comes out tender and glazed in a sticky, garlicky honey sauce, it almost disappears from the plate in seconds. This recipe is a family favorite because it’s delicious hot, warm, or cold straight from the fridge. I like to spoon the sauce over steamed rice and serve the drumsticks with crisp cucumber slices for a quick, satisfying meal.

This dish is also great for meal prep. Make a big batch and portion it into lunches for the week — the flavors hold up well as leftovers.

Honey Garlic Chicken Drumsticks

This recipe is budget-friendly and schedule-friendly. Toss the marinade ingredients into a zipper-top bag, add the chicken, and refrigerate — you can do this in the morning before work or even the night before. For best flavor, marinate at least 4 hours; overnight is even better. Drumsticks and bone-in, skin-on thighs are ideal because they stay juicy during cooking and are usually economical at the store.

If you’re working with frozen chicken, thaw in the refrigerator overnight before marinating. I don’t recommend boneless, skinless thighs here — bone-in cuts hold up and stay moist.

Honey Garlic Chicken Legs

I usually bake this in the oven during cooler months and use a pellet grill in summer. Both methods work well. Once the chicken reaches 165ºF internally, transfer the pan to the stovetop to reduce the sauce until sticky, or briefly broil the chicken for a lightly charred glaze — I enjoy that hint of smoke, but it’s optional.

Use a large cast-iron skillet if you have one; it easily holds about 4 pounds of drumsticks and thighs. If not, split the chicken between two oven-safe pans or a 9×13-inch metal pan.

Recipes with Chicken Drumsticks

If you love drumsticks, try smoked or grilled variations for other easy family meals. Smoked chicken legs are simple and economical, and grilled barbecue drumsticks deliver that classic tangy, smoky flavor. If you want a similar sticky sauce on pork for a faster option, try a garlic-ginger sticky pork recipe — the same sweet-savory concept works beautifully with different proteins.

For sides, bright salads like Asian carrot salad or a cabbage salad pair well with the sweet sauce, and a simple dessert like a yogurt-based cake or brownies finishes the meal nicely.

Irresistibly sticky and deeply flavored, this baked honey garlic chicken is easy to make and perfect for meal prep. Make a big batch and enjoy lunches all week.

Equipment

  • large cast iron or everyday pan

Ingredients

  • 1 cup honey
  • 3 tablespoons Sriracha or your favorite hot sauce
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
  • 8 cloves garlic peeled and minced
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons kosher salt
  • 3/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/4 teaspoon MSG optional
  • 4 pounds chicken drumsticks or bone-in, skin-on thighs, or a mix
  • 1 tablespoon light olive oil
  • 3 green onions trimmed and thinly sliced
  • 1 tablespoon fresh cilantro or parsley minced

Instructions

  • Add the honey, hot sauce, apple cider vinegar, garlic, salt, pepper, smoked paprika, and MSG (if using) to a gallon zipper-top bag. Seal and squeeze to mix.
  • Add the drumsticks and/or thighs, remove as much air as possible, and zip shut. Shake to coat evenly, place the bag in a bowl or container, and refrigerate for at least 4 hours or up to 24 hours.

To Bake the Honey Garlic Chicken Thighs in the Oven or on a Pellet Grill

  • Place your skillet in the oven or on the pellet grill and preheat to 375ºF.
  • Drizzle olive oil into the preheated skillet. Arrange the chicken in a single layer and pour the marinade over it. Bake for about 45 minutes, flipping every 15 minutes, until the internal temperature reaches 165ºF.
  • Transfer the pan to a medium-high burner and bring the sauce to a boil. Reduce heat to medium and simmer until the sauce has thickened and reduced by about half, roughly 5 minutes. Garnish with sliced green onions and minced cilantro or parsley, or proceed to the optional glazing step.

Optional Glazing Step

  • Preheat the broiler with a rack about 8 inches below. Slide the pan under the broiler and broil until the edges show light charring, about 3–5 minutes. Watch closely so the honey doesn’t burn.
  • Flip the pieces and broil the other side for a similar char. Remove, garnish with green onions and minced herbs, and serve.
